| Vitreoretinal
Services (Medical) |
| The retina is affected by a variety of disorders seen
at all age groups. The commonest include Retinal Detachment, Diabetic
Retinopathy and other inflammations. A detailed study of the retina
involves a thorough clinical examination as well as information from
ancillary diagnostic techniques. GEI has one of the most advanced
vitreoretinal services in South India. It is a referral centre for
nearly all the surgical and medical treatment of retinal diseases. |
| Fundus Flourescein
Angiography |
| It is a detailed study of the retinal microstructure
and blood vessels using a water soluble dye (Fluorescein Sodium),
which is injected into a vein. Photographs of the retina are taken
as the dye circulates through the retina and its blood vessels. |
 |
| 532 Green Laser and 810 Diode Laser are used for the
treatment of several retinal vascular occlusions, retinal holes ,
and many other retinal disorders |
Types of Lasers :
Double Frequency YAG Laser – 532nm with attachment to indirect
ophthalmoscope delivery >> Diode Laser 810 nm >>
Laser indirect for treatment for retinopathy of prematurity , retinal
holes etc. |
 |
| Screening
For Early Detection Of Diabetic Retinopathy |
| All patients who give history of diabetes
are screened for presence of any retinal changes of diabetes. The
pupils are dilated and a detailed retinal evaluation is done and treatment
is advised accordingly. |

Macula Clinic |
| The macula is the small central part of the retina,
which is responsible for the sharpness of the image and the color
that we perceive. It is the most important part of the retina, and
is susceptible to a variety of affictions such as age related macular
degeneration, inflammations and infections. |
Diabetic Retinopathy Clinic |
| There is an alarming increase in the incidence of diabetes
mellitus in our country. According to WHO(World Health Organisation)
statistic, there will be 57million diabetics by the year 2025 and
1/4th of them can be extrapolated to suffer from diabetic retinopathy.
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a long-term complication involving the
blood vessels of the retina. DR is related to the duration of the
disease, the degree of control of blood sugar and other factors. Timely
detection and laser treatment are the mainstay of therapy. In later
stages of the disease complications such as Vitreous Haemorrhage,
retinal detachment and neovascular glaucoma can occur. Advanced stages
need complicated vitreoretinal surgery. This clinic caters to all
diabetic patients in screening for retinopathy, counseling and medical
and surgical treatment of diabetic retinopathy. |
Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) |
| In ROP clinic, premature babies are screened for retinopathy
of prematurity in the retinal clinic or during a visit to the neonatal
ICU. Treatment for threshold disease is done using a laser photocoagulation
(810nm or 532nm green) cryotherapy. The vitreoretinal surgeon with
utmost care also performs surgical treatment for advanced ROP with
retinal detachment. This clinic is helped by consultant pediatricians
in managing the premature. |
